The Daily Afternoon Rainfall — A Sign We Shouldn’t Ignore
Lately, rain has been falling almost every afternoon in many regions, including the Greater Jakarta area. This seemingly routine pattern is more than just a seasonal shift; to me, it feels like nature is speaking and we should not look away.
Afternoon rain does bring its own atmosphere: wet streets, cooler air, and a city whose rhythm suddenly changes. But behind that familiar scene lies a bigger question worth considering: why has the rain become so consistent, almost predictable, at the same hour every day?
Some might dismiss it as normal since the rainy season has begun. Yet if we look closer, the increasing intensity and irregularity of weather patterns over recent years is a clear sign that climate change is real. Unpredictable weather has now become part of our daily lives.
The sudden downpours each afternoon also affect people’s routines. Already congested roads become even more clogged, public transportation slows down, and online ride-hailing fares spike due to surging demand. This shows that weather changes are not just about nature—they influence the economy, productivity, and the daily rhythm of city life.
In my view, the recent pattern of afternoon rain should serve as a reminder to become more environmentally aware. The government needs to strengthen weather warning systems and improve drainage infrastructure so the city doesn’t grind to a halt every time it rains. Meanwhile, the public must adapt by carrying rain gear, planning travel earlier, and using private vehicles more wisely.
Rain is indeed a blessing, but it also carries a message. And lately, that message has been louder than ever. It’s time we not only feel the rain but understand what it’s telling us.
