The Death of a Student at South Tangerang's Junior High School 19: A Loud Alarm About the Vulnerability of Security in School Environments
The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has asked the police to thoroughly investigate this case, but I believe law enforcement alone will not be enough. The school environment should be the safest place for children—not a place that threatens their safety. The fact that violence can occur with an object as heavy as an iron bench indicates significant gaps in supervision, the control of aggressive behavior, and a school culture that may have allowed acts of violence to be considered "normal."
This tragedy also demonstrates that character education has not yet truly taken root. Many schools are preoccupied with academic scores, neglecting to cultivate a culture of empathy, mutual respect, and the ability to resolve conflicts without violence. A healthy social environment for adolescents is the foundation of successful learning.
In my view, local governments and educational institutions must take concrete steps: tighten supervision, improve anti-bullying programs, provide competent counselors, and provide a safe space for students to report bullying without fear of retaliation. Parents also need to be actively involved in monitoring their children's emotional well-being and behavior at home.
The death of a student at SMPN 19 Tangsel is not just a statistic; it is a child's life that should be protected. This case should be a turning point—that violence in schools can no longer be dismissed as "juvenile delinquency." This is a collective failure that must be addressed immediately. Otherwise, we must be prepared for similar tragedies in the future.
